Genesis 8:11Sefaria

The return of the dove to the Ark at the end of the day brings the first tangible sign of hope and the renewal of life following the global destruction. Arriving in the evening aligns with the natural behavior of birds returning to their nests to sleep [קאסוטו]. However, the very fact that the dove lingered outside for an entire day proved that it had finally found a resting place for its feet Returning specifically at dusk also carries deeper symbolism, bringing a much-needed sense of light and comfort to the inhabitants of the Ark just as darkness was falling [כלי יקר].

The item the dove brought back raises a practical question: how did olive trees survive the devastation of the Flood? Some commentators explain that the floodwaters rose gradually, without violent currents that would have uprooted the trees Others suggest the leaf was retrieved from the Land of Israel, which was not subjected to the direct, destructive downpour of the Flood but was merely covered by waters flowing from elsewhere Alternatively, the gates of the Garden of Eden may have opened for the dove to retrieve the leaf from there [רמב״ן]. Additionally, the olive tree may have been spared because it does not accept grafting from other species, meaning it did not participate in the corruption of species that preceded the Flood [פרדס יוסף]. The dove specifically chose an olive branch because olive trees are relatively short; finding one proved that the water levels had dropped significantly enough to reveal lower mountains Furthermore, olive leaves are robust and hard, preventing them from rotting in the water [ביאור שטיינזלץ, צפנת פענח], and they naturally remain on the tree throughout all seasons of the year [רד״ק, שד״ל].

The condition of the leaf itself offers further insight. The primary approach among commentators is that the leaf was freshly plucked or torn. This proved to Noah that the dove had actively severed it from a living tree, rather than simply finding a dead leaf floating on the water's surface Another perspective describes the leaf as fresh and green, serving as clear evidence that the earth's vegetation was beginning to bloom once again A third approach suggests the leaf was simply gathered as food This leads some to propose that the bird sent out was actually a male, following the natural instinct of male birds to forage and bring food back to their mates However, others maintain that the description refers purely to the plucked state of the leaf itself, rather than implying a specific action of gathering food

Beyond the physical proof of receding waters, the leaf carried in the dove's beak represents a profound symbolic message. According to the Midrash, the dove was offering a message or a prayer to God, asking that her sustenance be as bitter as an olive but entrusted directly to God's hands, rather than being as sweet as honey but dependent on flesh and blood Although the dove enjoyed abundant and sweet food while inside the Ark, she purposefully chose a bitter leaf. This choice expressed the supreme values of freedom, independence, and making do with less. She preferred to forage for bitter food on her own, relying entirely on the Creator, rather than remaining dependent on human kindness Through this collection of signs, Noah understood that the waters had finally lessened and the earth was beginning to heal and return to its natural state
