Haggai 2:13Sefaria

The prophet Haggai continues to test the priests to see how well they understand the complex laws of ritual purity and impurity. Specifically, he challenges them on how impurity travels through a chain of physical contact.

The test begins with a scenario involving impurity related to death. Commentators offer two ways to understand the exact source of this impurity. Some explain that it refers to the actual corpse itself [רש״י]. Others suggest it refers to a living person who has become impure after coming into contact with a dead body [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Haggai then asks what happens if this source of impurity touches the various foods and liquids mentioned previously, namely bread, stew, wine, and oil [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Even though the question asks about touching all of these items, it does not mean touching every item at the exact same time. Rather, it refers to touching any single one of them [אבן עזרא]. The core of the prophet's question is whether these specific items will contract impurity under these exact conditions [מלבי״ם].

The true purpose of this question is to see if the priests understand the concept of third-degree impurity. The chain of contact starts with a corpse, which holds the absolute highest level of impurity. A garment that touches the corpse drops one level, becoming a primary source of impurity itself. If that garment touches bread, the bread contracts first-degree impurity. The stew it touches then gets second-degree impurity, and finally, the wine or oil receives third-degree impurity [מצודת דוד]. Because a corpse carries such a severe level of impurity, the calculation shifts. A level of contact that might normally result in a fifth-degree impurity from a lesser source, like a dead creature, results in a fourth-degree impurity when the original source is a human corpse [רש״י].

The priests answer correctly, confirming that impurity does indeed travel down this chain to infect the other items [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. By answering accurately, they prove their deep expertise in the complex laws of third-degree impurity [מצודת דוד]. Ultimately, despite the intricate legal details involved, the general message and the dialogue itself remain straightforward and clear [רד״ק].
