Haggai 2:14Sefaria

The laws of purity and impurity serve as a sharp metaphor for the moral and spiritual condition of the people. Impurity and spiritual flaws spread easily, transferring from one thing to another through mere external contact. In contrast, holiness does not transfer automatically; it requires deep internal work and genuine dedication. The people mistakenly believed that the simple act of bringing sacrifices to the altar would be enough to make them holy and secure blessings for their crops. However, the prophet clarifies that holiness cannot be acquired so superficially.

When identifying exactly who is receiving this rebuke, there are different perspectives. Some commentators understand the dual address to the people and the nation as a rhetorical tool meant simply for emphasis A different approach suggests a division among the audience, where one term refers specifically to the priests—a select and elevated group—while the other encompasses the entire Israelite nation

God's displeasure regarding their observance of His laws stems from several intertwined issues. First, both the priests and the general public are steeped in ignorance, making frequent mistakes because they do not apply their hearts to study They display a glaring hypocrisy by carefully bringing sacrifices for minor, unintentional mistakes while deliberately committing severe offenses [אבן עזרא]. Furthermore, all of their actions are tainted with impurity. Just as physical impurity clings to the body through surface contact, their deeds are tainted because they are performed entirely on a superficial level, lacking any genuine intention in heart and soul [מלבי״ם].

The root of this impurity lies in their deeply flawed priorities. The people eagerly rush to build their own private homes but completely neglect the building of God's House, leaving it in ruins The priests share the blame in this, as they fail to warn or encourage the nation to rebuild the Temple [רד״ק]. Consequently, the sacrifices they offer are considered entirely impure. Without proper spiritual intention, a sacrifice is reduced to a mere physical act performed on stones, causing the people's impurity to cling to it [מלבי״ם]. Moreover, the very act of offering sacrifices on the altar while the Temple remains destroyed demonstrates a profound disrespect for God's honor, rendering the offerings invalid and impure [רד״ק]. Unless they dedicate themselves to learning and correcting their ways, all their service at the altar will remain tainted [מצודת דוד].
