הושע, פרק ד׳, פסוק י״א

Hosea 4:11Sefaria

זְנ֛וּת וְיַ֥יִן וְתִיר֖וֹשׁ יִֽקַּֽח־לֵֽב׃

Immersion in lust and addiction clouds human judgment, stripping away moral and spiritual clarity. A life consumed by prostitution and heavy drinking actively destroys a person's intellect. There is a general consensus among commentators that these specific vices rob individuals of their ability to think clearly. [אבן עזרא] notes that prostitution, aged wine, and new wine each stand entirely on their own as destructive habits, with every single one possessing an independent power to corrupt the mind.

The distinction between aged wine and new wine highlights their different intoxicating effects ([מצודת ציון], [מצודת דוד]). New wine is noted separately because it carries a unique danger, intoxicating the drinker and stealing away their reason with remarkable speed ([רד״ק]). Falling victim to these addictions results in a total loss of intellect and the capacity to understand ([אבן עזרא]). Consequently, those who give in to these desires are stripped of the wisdom needed to recognize the good path they should walk ([רד״ק]).

This loss of understanding ultimately severs a person's connection to following God ([רש״י]). Instead of seeking a higher purpose, their desires become entirely consumed by drunkenness and lust ([ביאור שטיינזלץ]). The devastating impact of these addictions extends beyond the average individual and directly threatens spiritual leadership. When a priest becomes distracted by such vices, his mind becomes warped. He loses his intellectual clarity, rendering him completely incapable of guiding the people and teaching them the correct way to live ([מצודת דוד]).
