הושע, פרק ד׳, פסוק י׳

Hosea 4:10Sefaria

Turning away from God leads to a profound sense of futility, where human efforts no longer yield fruit or satisfaction, and the divine blessing departs from one's work. This punishment strikes two central areas of life for the people and the priests.

First, they eat but remain hungry. Because they lack God's blessing, their food brings them no positive results [ביאור שטיינזלץ], as a literal curse rests in their stomachs [מצודת דוד]. This is a sharp contrast to earlier times. In the past, when the priests lived righteously, a divine blessing rested within them, allowing them to feel completely satisfied even from the small portions of the sacrifices they received. Now, tainted by sin, they consume their food but find no satisfaction [מלבי״ם].

Parallel to this endless hunger is a pursuit of immorality that leads to no growth [רד״ק]. Instead of multiplying and gaining strength, their numbers will stagnate. They will not succeed in raising sons and daughters; even if offspring are conceived, they will not survive to birth [רש״י, מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון, אבן עזרא, רד״ק]. Their intimate relationships are entirely classified as immorality because their intentions are corrupt, completely detached from fulfilling God's Commandment [מצודת דוד]. There are different perspectives on the scope of this behavior. Some maintain that the people simply engaged in these immoral acts themselves [רד״ק]. Others emphasize a broader corruption, suggesting they not only sinned but actively enticed and led others down the same destructive path [אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם].

The root of this punishment lies in their complete abandonment of God. The primary approach among commentators is that they simply turned away from Him, ceasing to keep His ways, His teachings, and His Commandments. However, another perspective [רב סעדיה גאון, רד״ק, מלבי״ם] offers a different understanding of their actions. Rather than keeping God's charge and distancing themselves from destructive desires, they abandoned Him specifically to pursue and safeguard immorality and drunkenness. They chose to cling to these vices, even as such behaviors captured their hearts and pulled them entirely away from holiness.
