Amon assumes the throne in Jerusalem at twenty-two years old, but his time in power is remarkably brief, lasting only two years. This sudden end to his leadership is not a random accident of history. Instead, it follows a clear pattern involving the heirs of rulers who deeply angered God.
Just like the sons of previous wicked leaders like Jeroboam, Baasha, and Ahab, Amon does not survive long in power. Because his father failed to follow the laws of the Torah and the proper conduct required of a king, the royal family lost the divine guarantee of a lasting dynasty. When leaders ignore the laws of God, He removes His promise of a long and stable reign for both the wicked kings and their children [אברבנאל]. Amon's mother, who was part of this short-lived royal household, originally came from the city of Jotbah.
