I Kings 19:17Sefaria

God orchestrates an inescapable, comprehensive judgment to cleanse the land of idolatry. Three distinct messengers are appointed to execute this punishment, each operating within a unique domain to ensure that no wicked individual or Baal worshipper evades justice

While the events might appear as a chronological sequence of escaping one danger only to fall to the next, historical reality unfolded differently. The actions of Jehu and Elisha actually preceded Hazael's military campaigns. Therefore, escaping does not refer to physical flight from a battlefield, but rather describes individuals who were otherwise shielded from the Aramean king's reach For example, the royal house of Ahab typically avoided the front lines and had a history of military success against Aram. Jehu was specifically anointed to eliminate these elites who would naturally bypass the casualties of conventional war

Each messenger brings about judgment through a different avenue. Hazael delivers destruction through conventional warfare [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Jehu's role is fulfilled through a violent uprising, systematically wiping out the house of Ahab, Jezebel, and the entire network of Baal's priests and prophets

The involvement of Elisha raises a natural question regarding how a prophet functions as an executioner. The primary approach among commentators is that this points to a specific event in Jericho, where Elisha invoked the name of God to curse forty-two wicked youths, resulting in their death by bears Additionally, a devastating famine in Samaria that claimed many lives was brought about by Elisha's intervention [רלב״ג]. Others view his role more indirectly. His constant rebukes and warnings, which the people stubbornly ignored, ultimately magnified their guilt. When enemy forces eventually slaughtered them, it was as though Elisha's own words of warning had struck them down [רד״ק]. Another perspective connects the judgment to the prophet's passing, noting that the moment Elisha died, raiding bands from Aram and Moab immediately swept through the land to deliver God's punishment [רד״ק].
