A promise of survival stands in the face of an approaching national disaster. Even as a heavy judgment is destined to strike the people, God ensures that a faithful remnant will endure. The impending tragedy, brought about by the sword of Hazael, is designed to sweep through the nation and eliminate the sinners. Yet, a clear boundary is drawn to protect the innocent, ensuring that the righteous will not be destroyed.
The scale of the devastation, however, will be massive. Ultimately, only seven thousand individuals will survive the ruin. This number represents the absolute total of all the righteous people remaining within the nation; beyond this group, no other innocent individuals exist [מצודת דוד, רלב״ג, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
What distinguishes these survivors from the rest of the doomed nation is their complete separation from idol worship. Their defining trait is an unwavering loyalty to God, marked by their refusal to bow down to the idol of Baal or kiss it in reverence. They are the few who entirely rejected the worship and service of any foreign gods [צאינה וראינה].
