I Kings 19:19Sefaria

A quiet, powerful meeting in a simple agricultural field changes the course of a nation, as a wealthy farmer is called to leave his possessions behind and become a spiritual leader. Following God's revelation at Mount Horeb, Elijah travels and finds Elisha working his land, plowing the earth with twelve pairs of oxen yoked together The primary approach among commentators is that eleven servants worked ahead of Elisha, each guiding their own pair of oxen, while Elisha himself brought up the rear with the twelfth pair. Positioning himself at the back of the line allowed him to oversee the workers as the owner of the field [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This arrangement highlights both his family's significant wealth and his own personal diligence [רלב״ג, אברבנאל]. Alternatively, some suggest that the number twelve refers to the size of the field itself, which required twelve days of labor to plow, placing Elisha on his final, exhausting day of work [אלשיך]. Beyond the physical details of the farm, the presence of twelve pairs serves as a symbolic hint that Elisha is destined to become a prophet and leader over the twelve tribes of Israel [רד״ק, אברבנאל].

As Elijah approaches, he performs a striking, silent gesture. He places his cloak upon Elisha for a brief moment, takes it back, and continues walking without saying a single word This act served as a clear sign of Elisha's appointment to succeed Elijah as a prophet, since wearing such a cloak was the established custom of God's prophets

This wordless exchange triggered a profound internal transformation. The cloak had absorbed the holiness of the Divine Presence and spiritual light from Elijah's recent stay in the cave at Mount Horeb. The moment the garment touched Elisha, his soul awakened, sensing this immense spirituality, and he became instantly bound to Elijah Through this sudden gesture, Elijah presented Elisha with a decisive test. He wanted to see if the wealthy farmer could abandon his riches, his social standing, and the fruits of his hard labor in a single instant, driven solely by a love for wisdom and a desire to seek shelter under the wings of the Divine Presence
