שמואל א, פרק ל׳, פסוק ל״א

I Samuel 30:31Sefaria

וְלַאֲשֶׁ֖ר בְּחֶבְר֑וֹן וּֽלְכׇל־הַמְּקֹמ֛וֹת אֲשֶֽׁר־הִתְהַלֶּךְ־שָׁ֥ם דָּוִ֖ד ה֥וּא וַאֲנָשָֽׁיו׃ {פ}

David’s distribution of the war spoils marks a full circle of gratitude and reveals a broad vision for leadership. For a long time, David was forced to live as a fugitive on the run from King Saul, moving constantly from place to place. Now, in a position of success, he purposefully sends a portion of the captured wealth to the exact people and locations that had offered him shelter, hiding, and kindness during his years of wandering. He is directly returning their past favors.

Beyond personal gratitude, there is a practical reason for sending the wealth back to these specific areas. The Amalekites had recently raided the land of Judah and looted this very property. By sending the spoils to these communities, David is essentially returning stolen goods to their rightful owners [רד״ק].

This distribution is much more than a simple display of thanks or a return of lost property; it carries deep national significance. By sharing the wealth, David demonstrates that he views his military victories as achievements that belong to the entire public and are meant for their benefit. This selfless approach to leadership laid important groundwork for his future, ultimately earning him the trust of the people of Judah when they later chose him to be their king [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
