ישעיהו, פרק ס׳, פסוק י״ב

Isaiah 60:12Sefaria

The survival of nations ultimately hinges on their willingness to submit to the will of God. A time will come when any nation or kingdom that refuses to accept His authority will face complete erasure from the world [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Such an absolute threat raises a profound question, as it appears to strip away free will, forcing the nations to serve God under the weight of severe coercion. However, the danger of total destruction is not tied to a demand for full religious observance. Instead, it applies exclusively to a basic moral threshold: the obligation to accept the status of a resident alien and observe the seven universal laws of morality given to humanity. Beyond this fundamental requirement, the nations retain their full free will regarding the complete set of divine Commandments [אהבת יהונתן].

For those nations that persistently rebel, their promised downfall is absolute, though opinions vary on the exact nature of their end. One approach understands their fate as total ruin and devastation [מצודת ציון, רד״ק], with some specifying that the land itself will be left entirely desolate and stripped of its inhabitants [שד״ל]. Another perspective suggests a more violent end, indicating that the rebellious nations will fall by the sword [אבן עזרא, רד״ק].

These sweeping promises, which include both the subjugation of empires and the utter destruction of those who refuse to yield, stand apart from historical precedents. Such dramatic outcomes were entirely absent from the prophecies concerning the return from the Babylonian exile. Their presence here points to a future redemption of an entirely different and unprecedented magnitude [שד״ל].
