ירמיהו, פרק ל׳, פסוק י״ט

Jeremiah 30:19Sefaria

A vision of restoration follows a long period of hardship and loss. After the deep struggles of the Babylonian exile, where the nation dwindled in numbers, a profound shift is promised. The future holds a complete reversal of their fortunes, bringing renewed growth and joy to their cities and homes.

The primary approach among commentators is that the dwellings of the Israelites will once again overflow with expressions of deep gratitude. From within their tents, voices of thanks will rise to God for the abundant good He will grant them. This deep gratitude will be accompanied by the vibrant sounds of pure joy, laughter, and lighthearted amusement filling their homes.

Beyond the return of joy, there is a powerful dual promise of national growth. First, there is an assurance of natural physical expansion. Families will grow with sons and daughters, guaranteeing that the nation will never again suffer the severe population decline they experienced in the past. Following this, an additional promise of greatness is given. The majority of commentators understand this second assurance as a conceptual repetition of the first, emphasizing that the people will grow into a massive and powerful nation. Consequently, they are assured that they will no longer be weak, poor, or insignificant, but rather strong and firmly established [רד״ק].

However, another perspective offers a finer distinction between these promises rather than seeing them as mere repetition. In this view, the initial promise of growth specifically addresses the physical population size, ensuring they will not decrease in number. The subsequent promise, on the other hand, deals entirely with their rank and social standing, guaranteeing that they will never again suffer a decline in their national dignity [מלבי״ם]. Through this lens, the full promise is comprehensive, assuring the nation of both physical multiplication and an enduring elevation in quality, status, and honor.
