ירמיהו, פרק ל׳, פסוק ט׳

Jeremiah 30:9Sefaria

וְעָ֣בְד֔וּ אֵ֖ת יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹֽהֵיהֶ֑ם וְאֵת֙ דָּוִ֣ד מַלְכָּ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָקִ֖ים לָהֶֽם׃ {ס}

The ultimate vision of redemption closely connects the spiritual loyalty of the Israelites to their political future. A true restoration of their national leadership depends entirely on their dedication to God. Returning to His service acts as a strict condition for the nation. Only if the people commit to serving Him will they earn the promised return of the Davidic dynasty.

This condition carries a heavy historical reality. Had the Israelites served God properly during the era of the Second Temple, the complete redemption would have materialized at that very time. However, due to the sins of the nation, this ultimate restoration was delayed and pushed off until the end of days [מלבי״ם].

When looking toward the future ruler who will eventually be established to lead the nation, there are different understandings of his exact identity. One perspective suggests that this refers to the historical King David himself, who will rise from the dust during the resurrection of the dead to lead the people once again. Another approach understands this royal figure not as the original David, but as the Messiah. Because the Messiah will be a direct descendant of King David, he is naturally referred to by his ancestor's name [רד״ק].
