איוב, פרק י״ח, פסוק י׳

Job 18:10Sefaria

טָמ֣וּן בָּאָ֣רֶץ חַבְל֑וֹ וּ֝מַלְכֻּדְתּ֗וֹ עֲלֵ֣י נָתִֽיב׃

The sudden and inevitable downfall of the wicked often arrives without warning. The primary approach among commentators understands this through the imagery of a hunter preparing an ambush for wild game. Concealed ropes and nets are set to tangle the feet of the prey [רש״י, רלב״ג, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ, רמב״ן]. Because these snares are completely hidden [מצודת ציון] and work together with the surrounding traps [מלבי״ם], they are buried in the dirt right beneath the traveler's steps. This ensures the victim remains unaware and unable to protect themselves [רש״י, מצודת דוד]. The trap itself [רלב״ג] is spread out and waiting exactly on the familiar path where the person usually walks [מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון]. Just as hunters hide snares for birds and animals right where they are known to step, disaster waits for a person directly on their daily route [רש״י, מלבי״ם].

Beyond the literal imagery of hunting, this scenario carries deeper symbolic meaning. On a personal level, it reflects the ultimate fate of the wicked in the world. Their punishment and the disaster awaiting them might be hidden for now, but on the day of their ruin, the destruction will become completely public. It will be as obvious as an object sitting in the middle of the road that no one can ignore. At that moment, panic and confusion will surround the wicked person, and they will be humiliated, trampled like dust beneath people's feet [תקות אנוש]. Alternatively, this hunting metaphor connects to specific historical events. In this view, the hidden rope represents a sin that has not yet become public knowledge in the city. The trap waiting on the path, however, points to the Chaldean armies, who had already begun their march and were ready to destroy their victims like a fully spread net [אלשיך].
