Nehemiah 5:16Sefaria

True leadership is tested by a leader's willingness to sacrifice personal gain, time, and authority for the sake of the public. Nehemiah’s absolute dedication to rebuilding the city wall serves as a prime example of this selfless leadership. He was constantly involved in the construction, investing all his energy into the project and continuously encouraging the workers so they would not lose heart [רש"י, רלב"ג, מצודת דוד].

Beyond his physical efforts, Nehemiah maintained strict integrity for himself and his fellow priests by refusing to purchase any land during this period [אבן עזרא]. The primary approach among commentators views this restraint as a reflection of his high moral standards. Because the people had neglected their own livelihoods to build the wall, many fell into severe financial distress. Rather than exploiting their poverty to buy their fields at a low cost, Nehemiah chose to support the workers from his own pocket, taking absolutely nothing for himself [רש"י, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Alternatively, this avoidance of real estate may have been a simple matter of having no free time. The leaders were so completely consumed by the burdens of the project that personal business was simply impossible [רס"ג]. From a more practical standpoint, purchasing land would have been useless anyway. Since the entire workforce was drafted to build the wall, there was no one left to farm the fields, meaning any acquired land would have generated no income [רלב"ג, מלבי"ם].

This total mobilization extended beyond Nehemiah's personal involvement. He did not merely volunteer his own time, but ensured that all his personal servants and attendants were gathered at the construction site as well. They, too, were fully dedicated to the effort, working constantly alongside the rest of the people to ensure the work was done [רש"י, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
