Proverbs 12:12Sefaria

חָמַ֣ד רָ֭שָׁע מְצ֣וֹד רָעִ֑ים וְשֹׁ֖רֶשׁ צַדִּיקִ֣ים יִתֵּֽן׃

A profound difference exists between how the wicked and the righteous survive in the world. While wicked individuals rely on external forces, manipulation, and destructive mechanisms to gain power, the righteous grow from a stable, fruitful, and entirely internal foundation that requires no outside help. The wicked do not act out of simple ignorance; rather, they carefully design malicious plans [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. They actively desire to make a living by feeding off the traps that evil people set for others through robbery and violence [רש"י]. A surprising perspective suggests that even when the wicked see their peers punished and caught in these nets day after day, they continue on their path, acting as if they actually love and desire to be caught in the very same trap themselves [עמנואל הרומי]. In a more complex dynamic, a wicked person might set a trap specifically to steal the spoils of other bad people. To hide his true intentions, he may even use innocent, righteous people as part of his trap, showing absolutely no pity for their suffering [אלשיך].

Another way to understand the desires of the wicked is to view them as seeking out strongholds rather than traps. In this approach, wicked individuals crave the shelter of fortresses built by other bad people. Their goal is to draw upon this external strength and support, which then allows them to successfully execute their own acts of violence and cruelty [רלב"ג, מצודת דוד, עמנואל הרומי].

In stark contrast to the wicked, who constantly depend on the traps or fortresses of others, the righteous stand completely independent. Their roots naturally produce the exact fruit meant for them [רש"י]. They have no need for outside assistance or external reinforcement because their power comes directly from within, fueled by their good character, deep understanding, and genuine search for truth [רלב"ג, מצודת דוד]. This strong internal foundation translates into a true action of God [עמנואל הרומי], one that constantly provides goodness and blessing to their surrounding environment [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Ultimately, this deep root does more than just yield fruit; it grants the righteous vital protection against the traps of the wicked and establishes a stable, lasting legacy for their future generations [אבן עזרא].
