Proverbs 16:14Sefaria

The anger of a flesh-and-blood ruler carries an immediate mortal threat. Unlike ordinary people who may lack the means to act on their rage, a monarch possesses the authority to execute death decrees with terrifying speed and ease This reality serves as a grave warning against provoking those in power, a danger that has historically claimed many lives, such as the tragic fate of the priestly city of Nov [אמרי דעת].

The destructive nature of this royal fury operates like an agent of death. Some view this as a powerful metaphor, where the anger itself becomes a consuming force ready to ruin everything in its path Others interpret the threat literally, noting that an enraged king physically dispatches his servants and guards to punish and execute, turning them into actual messengers of death

Standing against this deadly force is the power of wisdom. A wise individual possesses the unique ability to wipe away and soothe the king's rage, saving lives in the process The primary approach among commentators is that the wise person uses deep understanding to calm the ruler and avert the harsh decree. They might achieve this through gentle, persuasive speech [מצודת דוד] or by carefully enlightening the king to see the true reality of the situation [אבן עזרא]. Another perspective suggests that the individual's wisdom acts as a form of ransom, effectively buying back the condemned person's life from the threat of execution [עמנואל הרומי].

In certain situations, the danger arises from a legal setting where a king's fury is triggered by a flawed judgment based on false or conflicting testimonies. Here, the wise person diffuses the anger not merely with soothing words, but through a rigorous investigation of the evidence. By resolving the contradictions and bringing the absolute truth to light, they successfully calm the royal wrath [רלב״ג].

Beyond the realm of human politics, this dynamic reflects a profound truth about the Supreme King, God. When God's anger is stirred by human sin, forces of destruction are set in motion. Yet, a wise and righteous leader, much like Moses or Phinehas, knows how to step into the breach. Through their spiritual wisdom, they atone for the wrongdoing and turn God's anger away, saving the people from destruction [מלבי״ם].
