אַף־הִ֭יא כְּחֶ֣תֶף תֶּאֱרֹ֑ב וּ֝בוֹגְדִ֗ים בְּאָדָ֥ם תּוֹסִֽף׃

The danger of temptation lies not only in the sin itself but in the sudden, violent way it strikes. The seductive figure of the strange woman operates with deep cunning, lying in wait to launch an unexpected attack. The primary approach among commentators is that her ambush is like a swift kidnapping [מצודת ציון, אבן עזרא]. Much like a predator stalking its prey, she may appear pleasant and inviting on the outside, but she casts her net precisely at the moment when a person is overcome by desire and completely off guard [שטיינזלץ, מלבי״ם, רש״י].

Beyond the immediate lure of sin, this environment carries real physical threats. Often, she works in league with violent criminals, luring her victims into hidden places where they walk blindly into a fatal trap [רלב״ג]. Even a foreign woman, who might not usually mingle with the Israelites, will seize any opportunity to snatch away someone who fails to guard his eyes and his path [מצודת דוד].

The destructive reach of this temptation goes far beyond a single moment, actively multiplying betrayal in the world. On a practical level, since this woman is often married to another, her actions directly fuel infidelity, conflict, and widespread misery among people [שטיינזלץ]. However, this physical reality also serves as a profound spiritual metaphor. The strange woman represents the lure of heresy, presenting attractive and deceptive arguments designed to hunt down the innocent and increase the number of those who rebel against God [רש״י, מלבי״ם].

Ultimately, this betrayal also takes root deep within the human mind. The traitors are the destructive urges and improper thoughts that already hide within a person's heart. When a person is not entirely devoted to God, external temptations exploit these inner weaknesses, layering betrayal upon existing flaws. Yet, someone whose heart remains firmly committed to God will recognize the hidden danger and refuse to surrender to the trap [אלשיך].
