אַל־תִּ֭תְאָו לְמַטְעַמּוֹתָ֑יו וְ֝ה֗וּא לֶ֣חֶם כְּזָבִֽים׃

Dining at the table of a powerful leader might seem like an incredible opportunity, but a lavish feast often hides a dangerous trap. The rich, fine foods served in the halls of power are rarely an expression of genuine affection. Instead, they are frequently a calculated tool for exploitation and the host's personal gain. There is a strong warning against craving these excellent delicacies [מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד]. The danger lies in the deceptive nature of the meal, as it is the food of a deceitful man [אבן עזרא].

The primary approach among commentators is that such a feast is never offered out of love, honor, or a desire to benefit the guest. The ruler is solely focused on his own pleasure and advantage. Behind the mask of generosity lies a hidden bill that the guest will eventually be forced to pay [שטיינזלץ, מלבי״ם]. The leader might only be drawing the guest close to use him as a tool to oppress the general public and gather wealth on his behalf [אלשיך]. Because of these dark motives, the food itself acts deceitfully. While ordinary bread gives life and heals the body, food offered with a greedy or deceitful eye offers no real benefit. Rather than sustaining life, it corrupts and ultimately destroys the soul [אלשיך, רלב״ג, מצודת דוד].

Beyond the physical danger of corrupt leaders, this warning reaches into the spiritual struggles within a person. The powerful ruler can be seen as a symbol for the evil inclination and the force of human lust, which constantly invites the intellect to feast at its table. A person must actively guard against this temptation by being satisfied with only what is strictly necessary and refusing to cross moral boundaries. The deceptive food of lust feeds only the animalistic side of a person and provides absolutely no nourishment for the true soul [מלבי״ם].

In the realm of wisdom and study, there are further layers of meaning. It serves as a call for a person of understanding to protect their mind. One should not waste mental energy on temporary matters or try to investigate concepts that are impossible to truly understand [אמרי דעת]. Furthermore, it offers guidance on seeking knowledge, warning students to stay away from dishonest teachers. Instead, one must seek out a truly worthy and wise instructor. In doing so, the student must also act with care, avoiding questions that might embarrass the teacher if they do not know the answer [רש״י].
