Proverbs 23:31Sefaria

The seductive power of wine extends far beyond its taste; it captivates through its striking appearance and the false sense of security it provides. The underlying caution focuses on the danger of being lured by a drink's visual appeal, a trap that ultimately distorts reality and judgment. People are warned not to crave wine simply because of its rich, beautiful red color This vibrant appearance can be highly deceptive. A person might mistakenly believe that such a fine drink will benefit their blood and overall physical health, easily tempting them to indulge [אלשיך, מלבי״ם]. Good wine often looks perfectly clear and inviting at the top of the glass [רלב״ג]. However, one must not surrender to the alluring sight, smell, and taste, fixing all their desire on the drink This visual allure is the primary trap, capturing the drinker's attention purely through its sparkling color and outward appearance

A subtle textual duality between the words for "cup" and "pocket" reveals the grim reality of the heavy drinker. While the person has his attention fixed entirely on the cup of wine, the tavern keeper pouring the drink has his attention firmly fixed on the drinker's pocket and money [רש״י].

As the drinking continues, the experience is described as moving smoothly, a concept understood in a few different ways. On a purely physical level, it describes how the wine glides effortlessly down the throat. This smooth sensation tricks the drinker into thinking the beverage is completely harmless On a deeper psychological and moral level, it illustrates the distortion experienced by the drunkard. A person who drinks heavily loses their inhibitions and critical judgment. They begin to navigate the world as if it were a perfectly flat plain devoid of any obstacles. Because of this impaired perception, crooked behaviors and sinful actions suddenly seem completely straight and acceptable

Conversely, a more moderate perspective suggests that if a person exercises self-control and limits their focus to a single glass without overindulging, the wine will indeed travel smoothly. In this scenario, it goes directly to the stomach to nourish and benefit the body, rather than rising to the head to intoxicate and cause harm [אלשיך].
