תהלים, פרק נ׳, פסוק ה׳

Psalms 50:5Sefaria

אִסְפוּ־לִ֥י חֲסִידָ֑י כֹּרְתֵ֖י בְרִיתִ֣י עֲלֵי־זָֽבַח׃

A divine call echoes across existence to gather God's loyal followers, those tied to Him by an unbreakable bond formed through sacrifice. The command to gather this nation sparks various perspectives regarding who is being told to do the gathering. One approach suggests this is an instruction to heaven and earth to collect the exiled Israelites [רש״י]. Another view is that it is directed at the nations of the world, along with Gog and Magog, to bring the Israelites back to Jerusalem [רד״ק, מאירי]. Alternatively, it may be an order to the heavenly and earthly courts to keep the righteous alive and spare them from total destruction [אלשיך]. A distinctly different perspective proposes that God is speaking directly to His truly devoted followers. He commands them to gather and guide those who mistakenly believe that the mere technical act of bringing sacrifices is enough to guarantee His love and protection [מלבי״ם].

There are also differing views on the exact identity of these devoted followers. Some understand the group broadly as the entire nation of Israel [מאירי]. Others narrow the focus to specific historical groups. It may refer to the generation that wandered in the wilderness, serving as proof that they have a share in the World to Come [תורה תמימה]. It might also point exclusively to those righteous individuals who refused to participate in the sin of the Golden Calf [אלשיך].

The unique union with God was established through a specific covenant of sacrifice [ביאור שטיינזלץ], formed precisely because of these offerings [אבן עזרא]. The primary approach among commentators is that this points back to Mount Sinai. There, the Israelites received the Torah and sealed their covenant with God through the offering of sacrifices and the sprinkling of blood upon the people. Alongside this, another tradition identifies the covenant as the act of circumcision [רד״ק, מאירי]. This connects directly to the Exodus from Egypt, a time when the Israelites showed immense self-sacrifice. They circumcised themselves and slaughtered the Passover offering, which was worshipped by the Egyptians, right in front of their oppressors. Despite the severe physical pain and the immediate threat of death, they trusted God and sanctified His name. Because of this profound dedication, they earned the title of devoted ones and were saved from punishment [אלשיך]. Ultimately, the purpose of recalling this powerful covenant is to rebuke these very followers, reminding them of the deep commitment they made to God and holding them accountable for their current behavior [אבן עזרא].
