צפניה, פרק א׳, פסוק י״ז

A heavy divine anger and a punishment of absolute destruction are destined to fall upon the sinners, creating a state of deep confusion, helplessness, and disgrace. God brings severe trouble and distress upon the people [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This punishment is directed at the Israelites [רש״י], and more specifically, the inhabitants of the Land of Israel [מצודת דוד]. Alternatively, this distress focuses on a specific group of people trapped under siege inside fortified cities, forced to endure extreme hardship and pressure [אבן עזרא, רד״ק].

Out of this overwhelming distress, the people will wander aimlessly, completely lacking direction. They will not know where to flee or how to find safety [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Beyond this physical helplessness, they suffer from a profound spiritual blindness. God brings this trouble upon them specifically to open their eyes so they might return to Him. Instead, they act like blind men, failing to understand that their own sins against God are the true cause of their agony [מלבי״ם].

Because they lack understanding and fail to repent, the enemy will strike them without mercy. Their blood will be spilled in massive quantities, with no one taking pity or paying attention, much like ordinary dust that is casually thrown and trampled everywhere [אבן עזרא, רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The humiliation and destruction will reach their peak in the aftermath of the slaughter. The flesh of the victims [רש״י, אבן עזרא] will be treated with utter contempt. Unburied corpses will be thrown and scattered in the garbage, discarded and left out like human waste and manure [רש״י, מצודת ציון, מלבי״ם, רד״ק].
