Zephaniah 1:18Sefaria

גַּם־כַּסְפָּ֨ם גַּם־זְהָבָ֜ם לֹא־יוּכַ֣ל לְהַצִּילָ֗ם בְּיוֹם֙ עֶבְרַ֣ת יְהֹוָ֔ה וּבְאֵשׁ֙ קִנְאָת֔וֹ תֵּאָכֵ֖ל כׇּל־הָאָ֑רֶץ כִּֽי־כָלָ֤ה אַךְ־נִבְהָלָה֙ יַעֲשֶׂ֔ה אֵ֥ת כׇּל־יֹשְׁבֵ֖י הָאָֽרֶץ׃ {ס}

When divine judgment arrives, all familiar human defenses collapse. Material wealth, often viewed as the ultimate anchor of security and stability, loses its value entirely and offers no safe haven. The utter helplessness of the people becomes clear. Their physical strength and bravery will fail them, and their silver and gold will be equally powerless to save them In the past, invading enemies might have been satisfied with taking money as loot. Now, however, bribes will be entirely useless and will not be accepted as a ransom for human life Wealth will become so meaningless that it will not even be able to buy basic necessities like bread [אברבנאל]. Alternatively, this failure of wealth indicates that just as the people will perish, their property will be destroyed right alongside them [אבן עזרא].

This ruin unfolds on the day of God's wrath [מצודת דוד]. A fire fueled by His zeal and anger over the honor of His name will sweep through the area This is a literal burning and destruction [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ] that will consume vital centers like the Temple and the royal palace [מלבי״ם]. However, the primary approach among commentators is that the destruction does not target the physical earth itself. Instead, it is aimed at the sinful inhabitants who actually deserve the punishment

The disaster itself is characterized by sudden, overwhelming ruin. Most commentators explain that this destruction will bring massive terror and immediate panic, leaving the people with absolutely no time to find an escape route or gather a ransom On the other hand, a different perspective suggests that the resulting panic serves a different purpose, softening the harshness of the decree. According to this view, God's ultimate goal is not total annihilation. Rather, He intends to strike deep fear into the people to wake them up and inspire them to repent [מלבי״ם].
