צפניה, פרק ג׳, פסוק י״ז

Zephaniah 3:17Sefaria

The promise of ultimate salvation brings with it a profound sense of divine closeness, marked by deep love and overwhelming joy. When the nation faces threats from foreign powers and idolaters, they are assured that God is right there among them, acting as a mighty savior [רש״י, רד״ק]. This close presence is meant to uproot any trace of fear from the hearts of the people. There is no reason to worry about being left without a protector, because God is directly in their midst. There is no need to doubt His ability to help, as He is a mighty force who has performed great deeds throughout history [מצודת דוד]. Furthermore, there is no reason to fear that He might be unwilling to act, because His commitment to save them is absolute [מלבי״ם].

Following this salvation, God experiences immense joy over His people. This happiness is not one-dimensional; it encompasses both outward expressions of celebration and a deep, constant inner gladness. God does not take His people back out of a sense of reluctant obligation. Instead, He accepts them with complete, perfect joy, much like a groom celebrating with his bride [מלבי״ם].

In expressing this great love, God chooses a profound silence. The primary approach among commentators is that God will quietly overlook and cover up the past mistakes of the people, deliberately choosing not to mention previous sins so they will not feel ashamed [רש״י, אבן עזרא, רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. This silence reflects a love so deep and powerful that it simply does not require words to be felt [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, this quiet state can be understood as deep, focused thought. God is actively thinking profound thoughts of love, constantly planning new ways to bring spiritual goodness to His people [מלבי״ם].

The celebration culminates in a ringing cry of gladness. This can be seen as a powerful reinforcement of the earlier joy, emphasizing the sheer magnitude of the moment [מצודת דוד]. However, a distinction can also be made between different types of emotion. While general joy is a steady and constant feeling, this final expression of gladness represents a sudden burst of enthusiasm over something completely new. God will continuously perform fresh miracles and wonders for His people, experiencing a renewed sense of excitement and delight with every single act [מלבי״ם].
