A moment of divine reassurance follows a period of intense spiritual seeking. After engaging in deep prayer and self-denial, a heavenly messenger arrives to comfort the prophet, confirming that his devotion was noticed and accepted by God from the very beginning. The resulting vision is a direct response to his heartfelt pleas [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The encounter begins with a call to put away fear. This terror may stem from a basic human reaction to the supernatural, prompting the angel to simply assure the prophet that he means no harm [מצודת דוד]. Alternatively, the fear is deeply spiritual. The prophet worries that he is not adequately prepared to receive a divine message, an overwhelming sense of inadequacy that manifests as severe physical weakness [יוסף אבן יחיא].

The messenger then acknowledges the prophet's profound dedication, noting that his efforts were recognized from the first day he focused his mind and afflicted his body. This mental focus represents an inner awakening to truly understand the fear of God [מצודת דוד], or a deliberate effort to attain prophetic knowledge [יוסף אבן יחיא]. The physical affliction mentioned does not necessarily imply a complete fast. Rather, it refers to a strict discipline of abstaining from rich foods, meat, and wine, a practice that serves to humble the body [מצודת דוד].

Because of this sincere physical and spiritual preparation, his prayers and questions were heard by God immediately [מצודת דוד]. The angel makes it clear that his arrival is a direct result of these prayers, having been sent on this mission specifically to answer his requests [רש״י, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. A deeper layer to this encounter suggests that the angel himself benefited from the prophet's devotion. According to ancient tradition, this specific angel had been banished from the inner heavenly sanctum, and he was only permitted to return to His presence because of the prophet's powerful prayers [רש״י].
