פרשת ראה

Deuteronomy 15:5Sefaria

The vision of an ideal society, blessed with economic abundance and free from poverty, is not guaranteed as a free gift. Instead, this reality is deeply conditional, requiring absolute loyalty to God's instructions. The promise that poverty will cease to exist hinges entirely on fulfilling the divine will [רש״י, מזרחי, שפתי חכמים]. In the natural order of the world, wealth and poverty often depend on the unpredictable turns of fate rather than a person's individual merit. However, when the people achieve absolute perfection in their study of the Torah and observance of the Commandments, they rise above the natural laws of fortune, earning a unique material abundance directly from God [אור החיים].

The requirement to listen to God’s voice carries multiple layers of meaning. On one level, it demands deep intellectual engagement and understanding. This involves thoroughly analyzing divine teachings [העמק דבר] and actively dedicating time to studying and teaching the Torah [אור החיים]. On a spiritual level, this call to listen contains a profound promise. Even if a person begins by learning just a small amount, that initial openness creates a channel for spiritual abundance. Heaven then steps in, granting the individual the ability to absorb and understand much more [רש״י, שפתי חכמים, ברכת אשר].

True engagement with divine wisdom must ultimately lead to practical action. The expectation to guard and perform God's instructions is understood in different ways. It can mean taking the deep study of the law and translating it into clear, practical rulings for daily life [העמק דבר]. Alternatively, guarding refers to a strict avoidance of forbidden actions, while performing relates to the active fulfillment of positive duties [אור החיים].

There are differing perspectives on the exact scope of the duties required to trigger these national blessings. Some maintain that the focus is specifically on the laws of the Sabbatical year, requiring them to be observed perfectly [בכור שור]. Others view the requirement much more broadly, encompassing every Commandment mentioned previously and those still to come [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This broader view demands meticulous attention to every single detail, ensuring no duty is neglected [אור החיים, העמק דבר]. When these high standards of study and action are met, God's blessing transforms all areas of life. The merit of engaging with the Torah acts as a spiritual shield, bringing success even in everyday trade and commerce [העמק דבר]. Ultimately, this grants the nation the economic strength to lend to other nations, securing pledges from them even against their will [רשב״ם].
