אֲבָנִ֤ים שְׁלֵמוֹת֙ תִּבְנֶ֔ה אֶת־מִזְבַּ֖ח יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ וְהַעֲלִ֤יתָ עָלָיו֙ עוֹלֹ֔ת לַיהֹוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃

Entering the Land of Israel and constructing an altar marks a defining moment that demands a unique architectural and spiritual standard. This sacred structure must be built entirely on the principle of natural wholeness rather than human intervention. The stones used for the altar must be gathered in their original, unhewn state, as there is an absolute ban on using iron tools to shape them [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Although the use of iron is forbidden, the specific requirement for whole stones serves as a separate and complementary rule. First, the stones must be naturally perfect, without any cracks or flaws, meaning iron cannot be used even to smooth out minor imperfections. Second, the prohibition against iron is so absolute that tools cannot be used even for tasks that would leave the stone intact, such as smoothing the plaster applied to the outside of the altar [העמק דבר].

This strict demand for whole stones carries a deeper meaning. It is considered deeply unfitting to construct an altar from stones where one part is dedicated to holiness while the removed, hewn pieces are left behind for ordinary use. Building an altar in such a fractured way is viewed as disgraceful, much like the severe prohibition against keeping deceitful scales and uneven weights [מגלה עמוקות].

On a practical level during this historical event, the timeline of the day was carefully managed. The physical construction and the sacrificial service blended perfectly into the schedule. While the people were occupied with building the altar and preparing the offerings, the plaster that had been applied to the stones had enough time to dry [מלבי״ם].

Beyond the physical stones, the altar and its sacrifices carry a profound symbolic message about personal devotion. When a person endures hardship and dedicates their entire being to the Torah, it is as though they have placed themselves directly upon the altar. This deep personal commitment is accepted before God just as favorably as a physical burnt offering [שפתי כהן].
