Exodus 24:9Sefaria

Following the completion of the covenant ceremony between God and the nation, the leaders of the Israelites experience a profound spiritual reception before the King of Kings. Their ascent fulfills a previous divine command for Moses to travel upward with Aaron [ספורנו, קאסוטו]. Their destination is clearly understood to be the mountain, making it unnecessary to state the location explicitly [אבן עזרא]. However, the group does not travel to the very summit. The peak, where God's glory rests, is reserved for Moses alone. Instead, the leaders climb only to a specific point on the slopes to bow from a distance, exactly as they were previously instructed [רלב״ג, קאסוטו].

The chosen group consists of Moses, Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu. Interestingly, Aaron's other two sons, Eleazar and Ithamar, are absent from this gathering for unstated reasons [ברכת אשר על התורה]. They are joined by seventy elders whose names are deliberately left unrecorded. This anonymity serves to teach future generations about the honor due to judges. If a person ever disrespects a standard court of three judges by arguing that they are not as great as Moses and Aaron, one can answer that these local judges might be just as important and worthy as those seventy unnamed elders [תורה תמימה].

The nature of this encounter with God is complex and impacts the participants in very different ways. The elders experience a balanced vision that grants them prophecy and spiritual stability. Nadab and Abihu, on the other hand, overstep their boundaries by gazing directly at the divine light. While Moses humbly hides his face and is ultimately rewarded with a radiant appearance, Nadab and Abihu feed their eyes on God's presence without gaining any spiritual benefit. Although their actions warrant immediate punishment, God refrains from harming them at that moment so as not to spoil the joy of the occasion [שפתי כהן].

Reaching this immense spiritual level is described in terms of eating and drinking. This does not necessarily refer to ordinary physical meals, but rather to profound spiritual nourishment. The leaders bask in the radiance of God's presence and draw sustenance from it, much like physical food strengthens the body. This spiritual intake is experienced in a state of supreme holiness and serves as a vital preparation for achieving prophecy [שפתי כהן, פרדס יוסף].
