Exodus 36:5Sefaria

The response to the call for materials to build the Tabernacle shattered all expectations, resulting in an overwhelming surplus. This unique situation set off a chain of reactions that illuminated the exceptional moral character of everyone involved: the general public, the master artisans, and Moses. The primary approach among commentators is that the Israelites brought significantly more supplies than were actually required for the construction Men and women alike delivered the bulk of their contributions with astonishing speed, completing the main collection in a single day. Yet, their enthusiasm was so great that they continued to rise early and bring even more, stopping only when explicitly commanded to do so This boundless generosity proves that the people were not merely attempting to atone for the sin of the Golden Calf, as doing so would have only required matching the weight of the idol's gold. Instead, their endless giving sprang from pure love and a deep desire to fulfill God's command [חתם סופר].

When the skilled artisans recognized the growing surplus, they immediately paused their labor to notify Moses. This swift action reveals their profound honesty and dedication. Rather than quietly pocketing the excess materials for their own benefit, they left their work to report the true inventory Furthermore, their ability to accurately assess that they had crossed the threshold of what was needed highlights their immense professional expertise and experience Still, they approached Moses with great sensitivity, careful not to appear narrow-minded or as though they were trying to deny others the merit of participating in the Commandment [שפתי כהן].

The artisans' concern over the excess gold and silver stemmed from the unique nature of the Tabernacle. Unlike standard construction projects, God established exact measurements and weights for every single vessel. Any deviation, whether subtracting or adding, would completely invalidate the work. For example, a Menorah commanded to be formed from exactly one talent of gold would be rendered unfit if crafted from two [ספורנו, מלבי״ם]. Additionally, some of the materials brought by the people had already undergone partial processing. If these items were simply hoarded in storage rather than used immediately, they would eventually spoil or become entirely useless [אור החיים].

Moses's reaction to the artisans' report completes the moral picture of this event. While typical rulers might gladly seize the opportunity to enrich their royal treasuries, Moses demonstrated that he had absolutely no personal desire for the wealth of the Israelites. He immediately issued a proclamation throughout the camp to halt the flow of donations This decisive action establishes a timeless standard for public leadership: those entrusted with communal funds must protect the wealth of the people, collecting only what is strictly necessary for the immediate needs of public institutions, rather than stockpiling unnecessary riches
