The primary approach among commentators is that bread acts as a fundamental support for human survival. Just as a physical staff holds up a weak and frail person, bread serves as the support of life that people rely on to be satisfied [רד״ק, מצודת ציון]. Because of this famine, the residents of the city will be forced to ration their food by exact weight. This physical suffering will be accompanied by deep emotional trauma.
