Genesis 14:11Sefaria

Following a decisive victory in the Valley of Siddim, the four northern kings turn their attention to systematically plundering the defeated region. The brutal reality of ancient warfare is on full display as the conquering army sweeps up vast amounts of material wealth, human captives, and essential supplies before beginning their long march home.

Commentators differ on exactly where this massive plundering took place. One approach suggests that the victorious kings marched directly into the abandoned cities without facing any resistance, stripping the urban centers and their surrounding towns of everything of value Conversely, another perspective argues that the invaders never actually entered the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, but simply gathered the immense treasures and supplies left behind by the fleeing armies on the battlefield [העמק דבר]. A distinct theory proposes that the true, hidden motive behind the entire war and the subsequent looting was specifically to capture Abram's nephew, Lot [צרור המור].

The spoils of war were extensive. While the captured property typically refers to movable goods and livestock [רד״ק], in this brutal context, it also includes human beings. The local residents were taken by force, stripped of their independence, and treated merely as part of the enemy's newly acquired assets Furthermore, the invaders seized massive quantities of food to sustain their forces. They did not just take basic military rations; they raided the enormous food reserves hoarded in the homes of these wealthy, pampered cities Confiscating royal treasures and food supplies to support an army was standard practice for military campaigns in the ancient world [העמק דבר].

Once the looting was complete, the army departed. The specific emphasis placed on their departure highlights the true nature of ancient raiding forces Their objective was never to conquer the land for long-term settlement, but rather to destroy it, strip it bare of all resources, and leave it completely desolate [רש ר הירש]. Their journey back to their northern homelands [ביאור שטיינזלץ] followed a deliberate, strategic route. They traveled through the eastern side of the Jordan River, passing through the regions of Gilead and Bashan, which were already under their control. This path allowed them to safely avoid any unnecessary military conflicts with the remaining Canaanite kings living on the western side [ביאור יש״ר].
