Genesis 35:27Sefaria

After a long and difficult journey, Jacob finally returns south to his father's home. This reunion marks a major turning point in the biblical history. Having just completed the account of Jacob establishing his family and the twelve tribes, the narrative prepares to summarize the lives of Isaac and Esau. This gracefully closes their chapter, paving the way to focus entirely on Jacob's legacy as the foundation of the chosen nation [חומש קה״ת].

Jacob is noted as coming only to his father. This subtle detail hints that his mother, Rebecca, had already passed away before he could reach her, even though her death is not explicitly recorded [צאינה וראינה]. Beyond the mere fact of his arrival, no further details are shared about the reunion between father and son or the events of Isaac's final years [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The specific geographic location of this reunion holds significant meaning. The arrival takes place in Mamre, which the primary approach among commentators identifies as a flat, open plain adjacent to the city of Kiryat Arba, rather than the historical figure named Mamre the Amorite [רש״י, מזרחי, גור אריה, לבוש האורה].

Highlighting this location as the home of Abraham and Isaac is more than a simple historical marker. It teaches a valuable lesson about honoring one's heritage, showing that it is proper for a person to live in the city of their ancestors out of respect for those buried there [רד״ק]. Furthermore, the presence of righteous people leaves a lasting impact on a location. The enduring memory of Abraham and Isaac's kindness provided Jacob with an excellent reputation and earned him the goodwill of the local inhabitants [ספורנו].

Despite the welcoming environment of the plain, Jacob chose to settle within the city of Hebron itself. He did this to distance himself from the descendants of Mamre the Amorite, preferring to live a life of solitude in a place already sanctified by his ancestors' dedication to God [העמק דבר]. Even though Abraham and Isaac were two distinct individuals, their time living in this region is framed as a singular, shared experience, emphasizing the completely unified spiritual legacy they established in that area [ברכת אשר על התורה].
