Amidst a sea of impending destruction, Noah is tasked with constructing an Ark that is far more than a mere escape ship. It is designed as a miniature, perfect world unto itself. The precise architectural instructions reflect the profound need to preserve life through the chaos, ensuring a source of light, protection from the waters, and highly organized living quarters.

A crucial element of the Ark is its source of illumination, derived from a root word meaning noon. The primary approach among commentators suggests this was a window intended to bring in light and fresh air once the torrential rains subsided. However, because the celestial bodies did not shine during the year of the Flood and the world was plunged into darkness, many argue that a standard window would have been useless. Instead, they propose that this light source was a radiant, precious gemstone that illuminated the interior of the Ark [רד״ק, רש״י, גור אריה, צרור המור, ברטנורא]. Reconciling these ideas, some suggest Noah installed both: during the violent storms, the window was sealed shut and the inhabitants relied on the glowing stone, but when the weather permitted, the window was opened [לבוש האורה, חזקוני]. Another perspective offers that the opening was fitted with a transparent material, such as glass or sapphire crystal, allowing light to enter while blocking the wind and water [רלב״ג, מחוקקי יהודה, ביאור יש״ר]. Conceptually, a window represents the ability to see God through the veil of nature, while a luminous stone symbolizes a higher spiritual reality where physical matter itself radiates divine light [חומש קה״ת].

The design of the upper section also required careful engineering. Rather than a flat roof where water could pool, the walls were sloped, gradually narrowing until the top was only one cubit wide. This allowed the heavy rains to glide off quickly, preventing the wood from rotting [אבן עזרא, רד״ק, רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ, קאסוטו]. Conversely, other commentators suggest this one-cubit measurement does not refer to the roof at all, but rather to the placement of the window. In this view, the window was positioned precisely one cubit below the upper cover, or featured an overhang of that size, to shield the opening from the descending rain [העמק דבר, מלבי״ם, חזקוני, דעת זקנים].

Unlike standard ships where the entrance is situated on the upper deck, the entrance to the Ark was placed on its side. This strategic placement prevented the fierce, downward-pouring floodwaters from flooding the interior, while allowing the door to be hermetically sealed against the immense pressure of the water and winds [מזרחי, ביאור יש״ר, רש״י, חזקוני, קאסוטו].

Inside, the Ark was divided into three main decks, each containing numerous smaller compartments to house the various species [ר' סעדיה גאון, קאסוטו]. There is varying thought on how these levels were utilized. A prevalent view assigns the top floor to Noah and his family, the middle to the animals, and the bottom floor for waste storage [רד״ק, רש״י, מזרחי]. Conversely, others argue that natural logic dictates humans would reside in the middle level—safely insulated from the harsh weather above and the dampness and waste below—while the animals were kept on the bottom and the waste stored above [גור אריה, לבוש האורה].

This tripartite division serves a functional purpose but also carries deep symbolic weight. The Ark was effectively a microcosm of the entire universe, structured to mirror three distinct worlds. While the external environment degraded and reverted to utter chaos, the interior maintained strict divine and cosmic order, preparing to rebuild existence once the waters receded [כלי יקר, גור אריה, מלבי״ם]. Ultimately, the meticulous construction according to these exact specifications demonstrates Noah's absolute obedience to God, illustrating that true salvation arises specifically through the precise fulfillment of the divine will [רש ר הירש].
