A crucial element of the Ark is its source of illumination, derived from a root word meaning noon. The primary approach among commentators suggests this was a window intended to bring in light and fresh air once the torrential rains subsided. However, because the celestial bodies did not shine during the year of the Flood and the world was plunged into darkness, many argue that a standard window would have been useless. Instead, they propose that this light source was a radiant, precious gemstone that illuminated the interior of the Ark [רד״ק, רש״י, גור אריה, צרור המור, ברטנורא]. Reconciling these ideas, some suggest Noah installed both: during the violent storms, the window was sealed shut and the inhabitants relied on the glowing stone, but when the weather permitted, the window was opened [לבוש האורה, חזקוני].
