The prophet calls upon the people to deeply observe the shift taking place and to pay close attention to the events unfolding from this exact day onward [מצודת דוד].

The significance of this specific date, the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, lies in the transition from preparation to action. Earlier, during the sixth month, the people were entirely focused on preliminary tasks, such as gathering and shaping stones. Now, they are actually laying stone upon stone to build the structure [אבן עזרא]. However, they are not pouring entirely new foundations. They are simply resuming construction on top of the original base that was already laid during the reign of Cyrus [רש"י], or perhaps during the earlier construction of the altar [רד"ק].

Alongside these historical and practical milestones, the prophet's repeated demand for the people's absolute focus carries a deeper, internal expectation. It is more than a simple instruction to carefully watch the physical progress being made [מצודת דוד]. Instead, it represents a demand for a fundamental change in the nature of their labor. Once the foundation of God's Temple is established, mere physical effort is no longer enough. Every act of building must now be driven by sincere intention and devotion. Only when the work is fueled by this inner connection will the people finally see the results they hope for [מלבי"ם].
