I Samuel 30:21Sefaria

וַיָּבֹ֣א דָוִ֗ד אֶל־מָאתַ֨יִם הָאֲנָשִׁ֜ים אֲשֶֽׁר־פִּגְּר֣וּ ׀ מִלֶּ֣כֶת ׀ אַחֲרֵ֣י דָוִ֗ד וַיֹּֽשִׁיבֻם֙ בְּנַ֣חַל הַבְּשׂ֔וֹר וַיֵּֽצְאוּ֙ לִקְרַ֣את דָּוִ֔ד וְלִקְרַ֖את הָעָ֣ם אֲשֶׁר־אִתּ֑וֹ וַיִּגַּ֤שׁ דָּוִד֙ אֶת־הָעָ֔ם וַיִּשְׁאַ֥ל לָהֶ֖ם לְשָׁלֽוֹם׃ {ס}

The reunion between the returning warriors and the men who stayed behind highlights both tactical military planning and a leader's noble character. As David nears the location of the two hundred men who remained behind, they emerge from their camp to meet him [מצודת דוד].

The primary approach among commentators is that these men had become physically exhausted during the journey. Because of their fatigue, David and the rest of the fighting force instructed them to remain at the riverbed to guard the heavy equipment. This decision allowed the remaining four hundred warriors to travel quickly and lightly in their pursuit of the enemy [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. In contrast, another perspective views their stay not as a result of weakness or fear, but as a deliberate military maneuver. According to this view, the men united as a single force to fortify and protect the rear. David issued a strategic order for them to guard a steep and dangerous mountain pass, ensuring that no enemy ambush could trap the fighting force on their way back [אברבנאל].

When David approaches the men, he does so with a clear sense of closeness and affection [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. He comes forward with open love, ensuring they know he holds no anger or resentment toward them for missing the combat [מלבי״ם]. Revealing his exceptional character, David takes the initiative to ask about their welfare before they even have the chance to ask about his [חומת אנך].

The specific nature of his question depends on the reason they stayed behind. If they remained due to exhaustion, David was checking on their physical health and recovery [מלבי״ם]. However, if they were stationed as a strategic rear guard, his question was a matter of military security, asking if any enemies had attempted to attack the dangerous pass they were assigned to protect [אברבנאל].
