Isaiah 45:15Sefaria

The presence of God in the world is often veiled, working quietly behind the scenes. Only when salvation finally arrives does it become clear that His guiding hand was actively shaping events even during the darkest times of concealment.

There are different perspectives on who gives voice to this profound realization. It may be the nations of the world, who will ultimately recognize God's greatness and admit the reality of His hidden presence Alternatively, these words might be the personal reflection of the prophet himself [רד״ק, שד״ל]. Regardless of the speaker, the sentiment reflects a genuine awakening to reality It is an acknowledgment that unlike physical idols carved into tangible shapes, God remains unseen by the human eye

This invisibility is not a passive state, but an active, deliberate choice by God to conceal Himself [אבן עזרא]. Furthermore, this concealment extends beyond His physical presence, as His ultimate plans and counsel remain entirely hidden from human understanding [שד״ל].

Commentators offer different reasons for this divine hiddenness. One approach suggests that God hides Himself from the nations in whom He takes no delight [אבן עזרא]. Another perspective focuses on His relationship with the Israelites. During times of judgment, when the people face the consequences of their sins, God masks His power. In these moments, it might wrongly appear as though He lacks the strength to save them [רש״י, שד״ל].

Yet, even in the depths of this concealment, His watchful care never stops. God is compared to someone hiding from a friend. While the friend cannot see Him, God continues to peer through the cracks, constantly watching and guarding the person even in times of deep distress [מלבי״ם].

Ultimately, when His mercy is stirred, God chooses to reveal His power, proving Himself as the true Savior of the Israelites. It is precisely out of this long period of shadow that His might is finally displayed for all to see, brought to light through the salvation He delivers to His people
