After a long period of suffering, the time of redemption arrives, bringing a dramatic reversal of fate. God takes the cup of poison and agony away from the Israelites and hands it directly to the nations that tortured and humiliated them. The proud empires that once trampled the Israelites will now drink from the cup of disaster themselves, experiencing the very suffering they inflicted, while the Israelites finally recover [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ, צאינה וראינה]. This cup of suffering passes to enemies who deliberately caused the Israelites deep sadness, pain, and turmoil [רש״י, רד״ק, אבן עזרא, מצודת ציון]. Some suggest these nations cruelly harassed the Israelites purely for their own selfish pleasure [שד״ל, מנחת שי].

These oppressors demanded absolute submission. They ordered the Israelites to bend down and lower themselves to the dust so that the enemy could literally step on and walk over them [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד]. In response, the Israelites accepted this extreme humiliation. They laid down and made their bodies like the ground, acting as a public street or marketplace where people constantly pass by [מצודת ציון, רד״ק]. This serves as a powerful metaphor for utter degradation, where the Israelites allowed their physical bodies to be used as a public walkway, trampled under the feet of foreign nations [שד״ל, מצודת דוד].

Beneath this picture of physical abuse lies a deep contrast between the body and the soul. The oppressors directed their demands at the soul, while the Israelites responded by offering their bodies. One way to understand this is that severe physical torture directly torments the inner soul as well [רד״ק, מלבי ם באור המילות]. However, a deeper approach suggests that the foreign nations were actually demanding spiritual surrender. They offered the Israelites physical freedom on the condition that they enslave their souls to idol worship. Faced with this choice, the Israelites bravely chose to absorb physical torture rather than compromise their faith. They surrendered their bodies to be trampled, but they kept their souls completely safe and pure [מלבי״ם]. Ultimately, this incredible willingness to endure such harsh humiliation and physical agony was driven entirely by their deep love for God [רד״ק].
