Isaiah 60:18Sefaria

A promised future era will bring absolute peace and security to the land. The need for physical defenses will fade away, replaced by a spiritual protection built on justice, divine rescue, and gratitude to God.

In this new reality, oppression, extortion, and the unlawful taking of property will completely vanish Many commentators explain that this promise refers to external enemies and foreign nations, who will no longer oppress the people or plunder their wealth Others draw a clear distinction between different types of threats, suggesting that the promise addresses both the end of internal crime between citizens and the permanent removal of foreign enemies attacking the borders [מלבי״ם, שד״ל]. One perspective offers a fascinating reason for the complete disappearance of theft: future economic abundance will be so overwhelming that silver and gold will be as common as stones on the ground, entirely removing any human desire to steal [אהבת יהונתן].

With this absolute security, the purpose of the city's fortifications will change entirely. Because there will no longer be any threat from enemy forces, there will be no need to stand guard on the city walls. Instead, God's salvation itself will serve as a strong fortress. The physical walls will lose their original military function, transforming into a living symbol of God's victory Rather than echoing with the sounds of war and fear, the walls will ring with the sounds of rescue and safety [מצודת דוד].

Similarly, the city gates will undergo a profound transformation. They will never again be shut in fear of invaders. Instead, they will become glorious gathering places where people come together to praise and thank God Furthermore, the sheer goodness and honesty of the city's inhabitants will act as a moral gate, naturally preventing any internal injustice from taking root [מלבי״ם]. A unique view connects these gates directly to the Temple, describing it as a spiritual center that focuses divine blessing much like a glass concentrates sunlight into a flame. Because of this intense holiness, the Temple and its gates will become the ultimate and most fitting place to offer endless praise and gratitude to God for His ongoing protection [אהבת יהונתן].
