ישעיהו, פרק ס׳, פסוק ג׳

Isaiah 60:3Sefaria

וְהָלְכ֥וּ גוֹיִ֖ם לְאוֹרֵ֑ךְ וּמְלָכִ֖ים לְנֹ֥גַהּ זַרְחֵֽךְ׃

The future redemption of Israel is not merely a private national event, but a profound global turning point. As blessing and success descend upon the nation, it transforms into a beacon for all humanity, radiating an ever-growing illumination that naturally draws the rest of the world [מצודת ציון, רד״ק].

The primary approach among commentators is that this movement toward the light represents a spiritual awakening. Nations and their leaders will gather to learn God's ways and witness good deeds, while Israel guides and enlightens them [מצודת דוד, רד״ק, צאינה וראינה]. Because Israel will serve as the sole source of light in the world, the surrounding peoples will naturally follow their path [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

There are differing perspectives on exactly how this light impacts the rest of the world. One approach explains it as a simple, natural reaction: those trapped in darkness instinctively look toward those sitting in the light [אבן עזרא]. However, others strongly disagree with the idea that the nations will remain in darkness and merely observe from afar. Instead, they argue that the divine light and blessing will actively spread outward from Israel, serving as a guiding force for the entire world. Touched by this light, the nations will awaken to honor Israel, replacing generations of persecution with kindness. They will help bring Israel back to their homeland, where the nations themselves will learn to revere God [שד״ל].

The arrival of both the general nations and their kings offers another layer of meaning. While some view the mention of both groups as a poetic repetition meant to emphasize the sheer scale of the gathering [מצודת דוד], other commentators find a deeper distinction between the masses and their rulers. One perspective suggests a spiritual hierarchy: the general population is guided by the light of the Torah, while the kings, possessing a higher capacity, merit to walk in the direct, shining light of God [מלבי״ם]. Another approach explains the difference through the specific type of wisdom that will be shared. Much like King Solomon, who engaged in the study of nature to converse with foreign rulers unable to grasp the deeper secrets of the Torah, Israel will share different levels of knowledge in the future. They will teach the visiting nations natural and worldly wisdom, as the profound divine wisdom will remain beyond their capacity to fully absorb [אהבת יהונתן].
