ישעיהו, פרק ח׳, פסוק י״ח

Isaiah 8:18Sefaria

הִנֵּ֣ה אָנֹכִ֗י וְהַיְלָדִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נָתַן־לִ֣י יְהֹוָ֔ה לְאֹת֥וֹת וּלְמוֹפְתִ֖ים בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל מֵעִם֙ יְהֹוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת הַשֹּׁכֵ֖ן בְּהַ֥ר צִיּֽוֹן׃ {ס}

The personal life of a prophet is often woven directly into his divine mission. Far beyond spoken words, his daily actions and even his family structure serve as a living, tangible message for the nation. The primary approach among commentators understands that the prophet's physical actions, such as writing a prophecy on a scroll, are paired with the presence of his biological children, who were given highly symbolic names like Immanuel, Maher-shalal-hash-baz [רש״י, מלבי״ם], and Shear-jashub [מצודת דוד, רד״ק]. The natural development of these children functions as a historical countdown. When one child reaches a specific age, the political reality will entirely shift, and as the other grows, the king of Assyria will bring destruction to the land [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Alternatively, a different perspective views these children not as biological offspring, but as the prophet's devoted students, whom he loves like sons. This takes place during a dark era when the nation had strayed from the right path and King Ahaz had shut down the study halls in an attempt to uproot the Torah. In defiance of this spiritual suppression, the prophet declares directly to the students sitting before him [רד״ק] that they will continue to serve God and act as a living example. Their continued existence and dedication guarantee that the Torah will never be forgotten among the Israelites [רש״י, שד״ל].

Whether referring to biological sons or faithful students, their purpose is to serve as signs and wonders, proving that the prophet's message is not a product of his own imagination but a direct communication from God [מצודת דוד, אבן עזרא]. There is a distinct difference between these two roles. Signs act as hints about the future, such as the symbolic naming of the children, while wonders are the extraordinary, awe-inspiring events that occur when the prophecy is fulfilled with absolute precision [מלבי״ם]. Together, these indicators carry a dual message: they foretell disaster for the enemies of Judah while simultaneously promising salvation for the House of David [רש״י].

Ultimately, all of these events are orchestrated by God, who dwells in Mount Zion. This clarifies that God stands firmly behind these actions and personally ensures that the prophecies will come to pass [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The specific mention of His dwelling place in Mount Zion is a profound expression of His great love for His people [אבן עזרא]. It reinforces His enduring promise to save them from the hands of their enemies, such as the kings of Aram and Assyria [רד״ק].
