When disaster strikes, people naturally seek a reason for their suffering. God answers the people by tracing the root of their tragedy back to the behavior of past generations who abandoned the truth in favor of idol worship.

A deeper look reveals that these ancestors did not act out of spite. Their failure stemmed from complete ignorance and a total forgetting of the Torah. They were like children raised in captivity among foreign nations, completely unaware of their own heritage. This profound lack of knowledge is what caused them to leave God and worship other deities. Their actions were born of tragic mistakes and foolishness, standing in sharp contrast to later generations who rebelled against Him intentionally and stubbornly [מלבי״ם].

Commentators explore the exact relationship between this loss of internal belief and the failure to practice God's commandments. One approach suggests that the spiritual decline began in the mind and heart. The ancestors first stopped believing in God internally, and this conscious abandonment inevitably led them to stop following the Torah [מצודת דוד]. Another perspective views the process in reverse. According to this view, the practical failure came first: because the people did not observe or even know the Torah, the direct consequence was a total abandonment of God, leaving them to naturally drift into idol worship [מלבי״ם].
