The downfall of a wicked person is rarely just the result of outside forces; it is often a self-made collapse born from their own fading strength and flawed schemes. A person who once walked through life with wide, confident, and powerful strides eventually finds their path shrinking. The primary approach among commentators is that this represents a loss of vitality, where steps become narrow, short, and constrained. For some, this is an actual physical decline. The individual's strength simply leaves, forcing them to walk with the small, slow steps of someone weak or aged [רש״י, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ, תקות אנוש]. Others view this restriction not as physical aging, but as a total lack of success. Even when the person attempts to move forward with force, their way is blocked, and they simply cannot reach their goals [רמב״ן, מצודת דוד]. Taking a different perspective, this loss of power can also point to a person's offspring. In this view, it is the children whose paths are restricted as they become trapped in the consequences of their own wrongdoings [אלשיך].

Beyond the loss of physical capability or momentum, a person's greatest obstacle is often their own mind. The primary approach among commentators is that the very plans and ideas of the wicked are what ultimately drag them down and throw them to the ground. Their bad deeds and schemes act as a self-made trap, leading them straight into a snare like a bird flying into a net [רמב״ן, ביאור שטיינזלץ, תקות אנוש, מלבי״ם]. Furthermore, these carefully laid plans will ultimately be broken and abandoned, as God intervenes to ruin their designs and cause them to stumble [רש״י, רלב״ג, מצודת דוד]. In the specific context of Job's life, this self-destructive planning takes on a tragic form. Rather than directly rebuking his children and stopping their endless feasts, Job chose merely to offer sacrifices for their potential sins. This approach inadvertently gave them permission to continue their behavior, acting as the very decision that pushed his entire family into disaster [אלשיך].
