יואל, פרק ד׳, פסוק ט׳

Joel 4:9Sefaria

A dramatic summons echoes across the world, calling the nations to gather their most powerful forces for a final, fateful clash. A divine herald orders the nations to spread the word and prepare for a massive military campaign. While most view this preparation as a standard call to battle, another perspective sees it as an act of divine defiance. It is a challenge to the nations to ready themselves, simply to see if they can truly stand against God [רש״י].

The exact timing and nature of this conflict are understood in different ways. One approach places it in the past, identifying it as the historical invasion of the massive army that fought against Jehoshaphat, the King of Judah [אבן עזרא]. However, the primary approach among commentators views this as a future prophecy about the ultimate war of Gog and Magog, which will take place around Jerusalem at the end of days [מצודת דוד]. This future conflict is expected to involve a series of global struggles between major world powers, with the current summons marking the very first stage. For this battle, two distinct types of fighters are called to the front lines: those who possess natural strength and bravery, alongside trained soldiers who have perfected their combat skills through rigorous military instruction [מלבי״ם].

Looking beyond a standard military clash, a profound interpretation connects this gathering directly to the resurrection of the dead. Dismissing the idea that this is merely a historical event or a simple challenge to the nations, this view understands the call to awaken as a literal rising from the sleep of death. At the end of days, God will bring specific righteous individuals back to life so they can witness the ultimate defeat of their enemies. At the same time, the greatest oppressors in history—kings and generals who previously harmed Israel—will also be resurrected. These wicked leaders will rise from their graves to receive their punishment and watch the destruction of their own lands. In this light, the summoned fighters are specifically those individuals throughout history who intentionally waged war against God and His people [אברבנאל].
