Numbers 27:20Sefaria

The transition of leadership from Moses to Joshua demands more than a formal appointment. To ensure continuity and secure the trust of the Israelites, there must be a visible transfer of spiritual and public authority. Moses is instructed to bestow some of his own majesty upon Joshua, establishing him as the undisputed successor. Commentators debate the exact nature of this majesty. Some view it as a profound internal and spiritual quality, reflecting the moral greatness and unique leadership traits that characterized Moses Others suggest it refers to governmental authority and public honor, a royal dignity that Moses shared with Joshua before the nation while still alive A third perspective understands this majesty literally, as the physical rays of light that radiated from Moses’s face. When Moses laid his hands upon his successor, God granted Joshua a measure of that same miraculous illumination

Moses is instructed to impart only a portion of his majesty, rather than its entirety. The primary approach among commentators illustrates this through the metaphor of the sun and the moon. Just as the moon does not generate its own light but reflects the sun, Joshua’s prophetic and spiritual power was not entirely independent. Instead, it was derived from and reflected the light of Moses, who had received it directly from God There are several reasons for this reduction in splendor. Because Joshua was a warrior possessing great external strength, combining that physical prowess with the full, overwhelming spiritual intensity of Moses would have created a force impossible for anyone to withstand [מלבי״ם]. Furthermore, Joshua simply lacked the capacity to absorb the sheer magnitude of spiritual abundance that Moses wished to give him, a reality that led the elders of that era to mourn the inevitable decline of subsequent generations [תורה תמימה].

The ultimate goal of bestowing this majesty was to ensure the obedience and attention of the entire Israelite congregation. Many interpret this as practical submission, meaning the people would accept Joshua's authority because they recognized that God and Moses had chosen him The obedience demanded was not directed at Joshua as a private individual; rather, the people were expected to submit to the will of God revealed through him [רש״ר הירש]. Alternatively, the emphasis on hearing suggests that the people would hear the news of the majesty bestowed upon Joshua, naturally leading them to treat him with the same profound reverence they had afforded Moses Because this transfer of authority took place in the presence of the elders, it guaranteed that the news would spread throughout the entire nation, cementing his new status [העמק דבר].

This emphasis on hearing raises a question: why focus on sound when majesty is typically something visible? One explanation is that it is inappropriate to stare intently at the face of a leader due to the holiness of the splendor resting upon him, shifting the focus to hearing his words instead [תורה תמימה]. Another profound perspective suggests that the reduction of majesty was deliberately designed for the people's benefit. The light radiating from Moses was so intensely blinding that only the elders could approach him without fear. By making Joshua’s radiance softer, like the moon, God ensured that ordinary citizens could comfortably approach their leader, look at him, and hear his words directly. Even though the elders may have grieved the diminished light compared to the days of Moses, for the general public, this accessibility was a distinct privilege that fostered a direct and intimate connection with their new leader [חתם סופר].
