כִּֽי־קָר֥וֹב יוֹם־יְהֹוָ֖ה עַל־כׇּל־הַגּוֹיִ֑ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר עָשִׂ֙יתָ֙ יֵעָ֣שֶׂה לָּ֔ךְ גְּמֻלְךָ֖ יָשׁ֥וּב בְּרֹאשֶֽׁךָ׃

The promise of historical justice for the nations that harmed the Israelites is not a vague hope, but an absolute reality waiting to unfold. The impending day of God is recognized as a time of strict judgment, payback, and divine revenge [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This justice is meant to punish all the nations that persecuted the Israelites and forced them into exile [מצודת דוד, אברבנאל, צאינה וראינה].

A major question arises regarding the timing of this judgment, as it is described as being close at hand, even though prophetic visions often take generations to materialize. The primary approach among commentators is that this closeness does not necessarily refer to a short amount of time, but rather points to absolute certainty and readiness. Because God has promised this day will come, it is considered as secure and prepared as if it had already taken place [רד״ק, מצודת ציון, צאינה וראינה]. Still, other perspectives exist. Some maintain that the destruction will indeed happen swiftly and without delay [אבן עזרא]. A completely different view suggests that this description is not about time at all, but is instead rooted in the language of battle, indicating a day of actual war when God will fight against these nations [אברבנאל].

The focus then shifts directly to Edom, making it clear that their punishment will operate on a strict principle of measure for measure. The exact cruelties they inflicted upon the Israelites will be turned back upon them. Those who murdered will meet their end by the sword, and those who burned others will themselves be burned [אברבנאל, מצודת דוד, צאינה וראינה].

To understand the complete nature of this payback, it is necessary to look at the two distinct layers of punishment Edom will face. The first layer addresses the physical crimes they committed, delivering justice for the actual harm done. A second, separate punishment is directed at their psychological motives. This ensures they are held accountable not just for their actions, but for the deep inner feelings of hatred, jealousy, and hostility that drove them to act in the first place [מלבי״ם].
