Proverbs 21:20Sefaria

The profound difference between wisdom and foolishness is clearly revealed in how a person manages their resources. Whether dealing with material wealth or spiritual gifts, a wise individual knows how to preserve and cultivate what they have, while the foolishness found within a person leads to the rapid and careless destruction of their own household

The primary approach among commentators focuses on practical, economic behavior. A well-managed home contains valuable items, fine foods, and precious resources, often symbolized by high-quality, perfumed oil which represents wealth and abundance. A wise person carefully gathers and protects these assets for future needs or to leave as an inheritance for their children. This stability is achieved both through God's providence and through the person's own responsible habits, as they spend money only on true necessities

In sharp contrast, a foolish person is driven by momentary impulses. The moment resources fall into their hands, even if inherited from ancestors, they quickly consume and waste them without any thought for the future Alternatively, this careless irresponsibility makes the fool vulnerable to others, who will take advantage of them and drain their wealth, leaving the fool with absolutely nothing to enjoy [רלב״ג].

On a deeper moral level, the management of wealth reflects a person's spiritual values. A wise individual ensures their wealth lasts forever by distributing it to charity and performing acts of kindness, effectively storing their treasures in the heavenly realms. A selfish person tries to keep everything for themselves, yet ultimately loses it all and leaves no legacy behind [מלבי״ם].

Beyond physical wealth, these gathered treasures symbolize the fulfillment of God's commandments, good deeds, intellectual growth, and divine inspiration. A wise person may live in a humble, simple dwelling, yet their home is filled with an immense spiritual fortune that secures their place in the World to Come. In this sense, oil represents greatness and an anointing for wisdom. A foolish person, chasing physical desires and disrespecting wisdom, values only material riches. By doing so, they destroy their own spiritual potential and waste the accumulated merits of their ancestors

A unique perspective suggests that the oil specifically represents fuel for lamps, meant to illuminate the night for the study of Torah and the pursuit of wisdom. While the wise person carefully saves this oil to light their nighttime learning, the fool exchanges it for wine and fleeting physical pleasures, or simply consumes it as food, entirely missing the opportunity for intellectual and spiritual growth [עמנואל הרומי].
