Proverbs 23:6Sefaria

אַל־תִּלְחַ֗ם אֶת־לֶ֭חֶם רַ֣ע עָ֑יִן וְאַל־תִּ֝תְאָ֗ו לְמַטְעַמֹּתָֽיו׃

Accepting hospitality from a stingy person carries hidden psychological, social, and spiritual risks. While an invitation to enjoy another's wealth might seem tempting, partaking from someone who does not give with a whole heart quickly turns a favor into a burden. A person who is naturally grudging with simple, everyday food will be even more resentful when sharing their expensive delicacies [אלשיך].

Even if such a host verbally encourages his guest to eat and drink, his inner thoughts sharply contradict his words. He agonizes over every single bite consumed. This hidden resentment creates a deeply uncomfortable atmosphere, making the guest wish they could undo the entire experience once the host's true intentions become clear. Furthermore, any attempt to share words of wisdom or engage in pleasant conversation will be completely wasted, as the host's mind is entirely fixated on the food disappearing from his table [רלב״ג, עמנואל הרומי]. Ultimately, accepting this false generosity comes at a steep price. The grudging host will likely find a way to extract double the value of the meal from the guest, potentially causing the guest to lose even their own basic sustenance [עמנואל הרומי].

Beyond a literal meal, this scenario serves as a multi-layered parable [מלבי״ם]. It acts as a warning to a dedicated Torah scholar who is struggling financially, cautioning him not to abandon his studies to seek the patronage of a miserly wealthy person [אלשיך]. On a philosophical level, the grudging host represents an individual promoting false worldviews. His special delicacies are deceptive ideas that sound appealing and logical on the surface but are entirely rooted in falsehood. Connecting with such a person and embracing his views will ultimately corrupt the true, wholesome beliefs one has already acquired [רלב״ג].

The warning also extends to the realm of education, cautioning students against learning from a teacher who is stingy with his own knowledge. Such a teacher harbors jealousy, fearing that sharing his insights will somehow diminish his own intellectual standing. Rather than guiding his students properly, he distracts them and wastes their time to prevent them from acquiring true understanding. Just as eating at a miser's table leaves a guest hungry and distressed, studying under a grudging teacher starves the student of spiritual nourishment and, in the end, causes the teacher's own wisdom to fade away [עמנואל הרומי].
