A person surrounded by enemies and overwhelming noise often dreams of simply flying away to find peace in total isolation. This deep desire drives a powerful wish to leave the populated world behind and seek the quiet safety of the barren wilderness.

The primary approach among commentators views this as a direct continuation of the wish to fly away like a dove. It reflects a firm, absolute decision to leave without any hesitation [מלבי״ם]. The goal is to create as much distance as possible from enemies, separating from them entirely to find a quick and secure refuge in the desert [מאירי]. This is not merely a distant dream, but a practical, immediate plan to escape and sleep in the wilderness that very night [מלבי״ם]. Opinions differ on how long this isolation is meant to last. Some understand it as a wish to remain in the desert forever [מצודת דוד], while others view the thought simply as a complete, finalized idea of immediate escape [מלבי״ם].

In sharp contrast, another perspective reads these thoughts not as a practical rescue plan, but as an expression of deep despair and helplessness. According to this view, the individual questions the actual value of running away from Jerusalem. Even if he creates vast distance between himself and his enemies, he cannot realistically live in the desert forever. Because of this, the idea of escape loses its meaning. Eventually, he will be forced to return to his homeland, where the exact same troubles will be waiting for him [אלשיך].
