צפניה, פרק א׳, פסוק י״ג

Zephaniah 1:13Sefaria

The impending judgment brings a total collapse of material security, turning years of human effort into sudden loss. God's punishments are destined to overtake the people, striking every one of their material achievements [מלבי״ם]. This devastation fulfills the familiar curses outlined in the Torah [ביאור שטיינזלץ], ensuring that the destruction will not bypass their property, their homes, or the crops of their vineyards.

The primary approach among commentators is that the target of this ruin is their accumulated wealth and physical assets. However, another perspective suggests that the loss refers to the draining of their actual physical strength and power [אבן עזרא]. Whether wealth or strength, these assets will be completely overrun. Enemy forces will either trample them underfoot [מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד] or violently seize them as plunder and spoil [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

As a direct result of this invasion, homes will be entirely emptied of their inhabitants. The houses will stand desolate because the people themselves will either be killed or forced into exile [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The tragedy deepens with the realization that the people will have worked tirelessly to build homes and plant vineyards, yet they will never enjoy the rewards of their labor. Some explain that this refers to homes they have already finished building; they simply will not be able to live in them anymore [אבן עזרא]. Others add that even if they do manage to live in their houses or drink the wine from their vineyards, it will only be for a brief, fleeting moment before they are forced to abandon everything [רד״ק].

This profound loss highlights a harsh reality. It is not just that existing physical assets are destroyed, but that future plans and unfulfilled ambitions are completely erased. When a nation faces death or exile, all their earthly plans lose their meaning [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
