Daniel 1:17Sefaria

Divine providence actively rewards those who maintain their spiritual purity in the face of great trials. After standing firm and refusing to eat the royal food, four young men are granted extraordinary wisdom that prepares them to serve as the most brilliant advisors in the royal court. The primary approach among commentators is that these four individuals are Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. Their remarkable intellect was not acquired through natural means, but was a direct gift from God, given measure for measure. The king had provided special meals specifically designed to sharpen the minds of his trainees. However, the four young men chose to eat simple seeds to avoid spiritual contamination. Because of their deep trust in God and their personal sacrifice, they received a divine blessing that improved their abilities far beyond the other youths who consumed the king's food

God granted them mastery over the languages, writings, and wisdom of every nation. This divine gift came in two distinct forms. The first is practical, scientific knowledge acquired through the senses, such as the study of nature and medicine. The second is a deeper, theoretical wisdom achieved through intense thought, which includes the ability to logically deduce new ideas from existing information

While all four men shared this immense wisdom equally, Daniel was granted an even higher spiritual level. Because he was the one who originally initiated the plan to avoid the king's food, he was rewarded with the additional gift of prophetic understanding [אלשיך, מלבי״ם]. His ability to interpret dreams did not rely on the guesswork or speculation used by ordinary dream interpreters. Instead, it was driven by divine inspiration, allowing him to understand dreams completely and perfectly [מלבי״ם].

This unique insight applied to both visions and dreams. While some commentators view these two terms as identical concepts with a dual meaning [מצודת ציון], others draw a clear distinction between them. In this view, a vision is a prophetic experience that occurs while a person is awake or involves a very clear visual image, whereas a dream takes place during sleep without a tangible physical sight [מלבי״ם]. Ultimately, this profound ability to perceive divine messages elevated Daniel to the status of a prophet, a level not reached by his three friends
